Design & Architecture

Historical Influences

Our neighborhood's unique history lives on through design.

A former furniture factory, live music venue and hub for graffiti artists and poetry readings, Canopy by Hilton Reykjavik’s design pays homage to our neighborhood’s unique history:

  • A room inspired by the 1950s residence of furniture factory owner, Kristjan Siggeirsson
  • A ‘Hjalti Chair’ designed by Siggeirsson’s son in every room
  • Art by local graffiti artist Sigurður Ámundasonhe who’s art once adorned his nearby home
  • An LP library featuring over 1,000 records, embracing our musical legacy
  • Our Poets’ Corner with its distinctive, towering bookshelf

Artistic Expression

Explore works by some of Iceland's most creative minds.

Canopy by Hilton Reykjavik is intertwined with the imagination of some of Iceland’s most famous creative minds and, being a good neighbor, we’ve invited a few non-local contributors as well.

  • Theresa Himmer’s installation piece, Waterfall #3
  • Margrét Guðnadóttir’s music box “billow” will play you an Icelandic folk song
  • A stunning artwork by renowned Danish artist, BjØrn Wiinblad is displayed in our Danish Room
  • Blonde Musicians by contemporary Icelandic artist, Birgir Snæbjörn Birgisson
  • A variety of pieces by the locally celebrated ceramic artist, Kogga display in our Library

Reflecting Nature

Our design takes influence from Icelandic natural landscapes.

Icelandic design is young, evolving and not constrained by tradition; often it’s influenced by our unique nature and landscapes. A team led by Björgvin Snæbjörnsson of Apparat Architects captured that mood:

  • A color palette with hues from Icelandic nature
  • Vintage-style teak furnishings
  • Wallpaper and carpets inspired by Basalt lava columns
  • We’ve played with the motif of a Canopy bed, offering certain rooms our own rendition
